The Hong Kong, China Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association is facing criticism over remarks made by its chairman, Josephine Ip Wing-yuk, during an opening speech at the 'Hong Kong Weightlifting Invitation 2024' event. In her speech, Ip referred to Hong Kong as a 'relatively small country' and categorized it as a 'small country' like Australia. Lawmaker Adrian Pedro Ho King-hong has called for an investigation into the incident and has asked the Hong Kong Olympic Committee to consider suspending the Association's operation. The Association has previously been involved in scandals, including allegedly withholding sports subsidies and mishandling national anthems and flags at international competitions.
