Perhaps an under-appreciation of books and reading does reflect that decline. Those old covers alone infuse a magic into the book before it's even been opened.
   It's similar to the old artwork on vinyl record sleeves. Now we just generally have a digital file, an ebook or audiobook, where there's no artwork at all.
