There is a long history of xenophobic  Ukrainian history in Canada, which I believe still affects the discourse: Uke’s are fascist and communist agitators at the same time lol! 

For example, this Scandinavian account about how they were treated matches the sentiment in this article from The Ukrainian Canadian being tooted today.

 For example, my dad got the strap for speaking Ukrainian at school, despite not knowing English, my mom was warned against having relations with a Ukrainian (Scandinavian ancestry) and even I remember anti-Uke sentiment from my childhood with lots of derogatory jokes.
