It’s sad that creepy voyeuristic data collection is the norm and people have just accepted that. nostr sets the stage for clients to compete to be maximally privacy preserving. nostr:note1c5tl384eapngwpl4xkg20g3lcpv8x8dateljach6chekx6f5f8ws60jgm6
We will show them that we can be different.
Privacy on Nostr is not really a thing though is it? It's all well and good that clients don't collect user data for profiling purposes but people should still be mindful about what they inscribe on relays because everything is public here. And will be forever potentially.
Yeah but if you use tor or a VPN all the relay gets is your npub key. Just don't dox yourself if privacy is important to you.
Mainly I mean the writing habits, unique word combinations, consistent grammar errors, etc. which can be analysed by scraping and correlated to behaviour outside Nostr. My main concern is to separate online identities to their respective platforms. It's the life of a nym.
Just authored a similar thought, and then noticed your reply. Yes, It's not a privacy tech. I'll bet future data mining will try to explore what can be done with nostr data, including all public notes and public meta data that people post. Social graphs etc. Is absolutely possible to build, and not much extra known data is likely needed to a whole social graph. (knowing their geo location, interests, psychology) It's best to consider nostr a censorship protection tech, and as you say; be mindful of everything being public. nostr:nevent1qqs2cqp095q8zrdphgtw2ya3wlcc0wgy00myxfy5jmcxhfalt80uw3gppamhxue69uhkummnw3ezumt0d5pzp7spvks0ryhmp6gu0kr3pet4wzkj0vm3tjjjrq0kc57fkgpnjurnqvzqqqqqqynuz9jc
Just yesterday I had to spin up an old unused nym gmail since a project I work with uses google docs.. and I noticed an email from google about privacy saying I had my Web & App activity setting turned on! 😳 so I clicked and dayum, I forget how truly dystopian that shit is! https://i.nostr.build/nAzq.jpg https://i.nostr.build/j6QM.jpg https://i.nostr.build/loBB.jpg https://i.nostr.build/Pa9r.jpg
Even though clients don't collect data on nostr more than average of user meta data is available publicly. And I don't think new usrs are fully aware of that. One day large scale datamining will for sure go for nostr as well, but with no central blame to aim. Also that's kind of part of the cost of public notes. Partly thinking of what @calle 👁️⚡👁️ was posting the other day, of his DM social graph.
