Naira Loses More Value Against US Dollar, Nigerians Blame 2 New Platforms, Ask FG to Close them

The value of the Nigerian currency, the naira, has depreciated in both the official and unofficial foreign exchange markets. In the official market, the naira closed at N1,234 to the dollar on April 22, 2024, compared to N1,169.99/$1 on April 19, 2024. In the black market, the naira fell by N100 to trade at N1,250/$1 on April 22, 2024. Nigerians have blamed the depreciation on two new cryptocurrency platforms, BYBIT and BITGET. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Yemi Cardoso, has assured that there is no plan to defend the naira and that the recent slight shift in reserves was unrelated to defending the currency.
