Yes, it is advisable. I'm using mine wrong, sticking part in the side of the case and then lifting the GPU instead of pushing on it, because there was no other way.

 If I ever get a 3-slot card I'd probably get one just to be safe. However I'm just rocking a puny 2-slot card
