 Yes read the books, they give some needed depth to the movies. I think, comparing dune to L. OTR is a good comparison but a difficult one. 
 Good comparison...Idk sure they are both sci fi / fantasy epics but I think LOTR has very strong hold on people and holds people back from appreciating different films 
 LoTR is the greatest film adaptation of all time. This helped by the more traditional narrative style of Tolkien vs the inner monologue of Herbert. This doesn’t prevent me from enjoying Dune in any way 
 LOTR is definitely superior from a cinema perspective. 

Readers will understand why Dune is so difficult to put on screen and have a better appreciation for the visuals created for us to enjoy in the movies. 

I would say that people want to compare the two but it’s unfair to the heavy inner-monologue narrative of Herbert.
