Family dreams and hopes 'shattered' following the death of Kenyan marathon world record-holder

Kelvin Kiptum, the Kenyan marathon world record-holder, and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed in a car crash near the town of Kaptagat in western Kenya. Kiptum's family, including his father Samson Cheruiyot and wife Asenath Cheruiyot, expressed their devastation and shared their shattered dreams and hopes. Kiptum had promised to build his father a house and buy him a car through running. He was also planning to run the upcoming Rotterdam Marathon in under two hours and finance his wife's business ventures. Kiptum's father revealed that Kiptum had chosen to focus on running instead of furthering his studies in electrical engineering. Kiptum's record, set at the Chicago Marathon, was ratified by World Athletics just last week.
