Your phone is spying on you. Your apps are spying on you. Your websites, search engine, fitness tracker, smart watch, IoT device, EVERYTHING is collecting anything it can and sending it off to be stored, cross referenced, and sold.
Data is the new oil.
So what? I don't care if Google knows I like motorcycles. By itself one data point isn't a big deal but once you start bringing everything together...
Who are you talking to? When and how long did you talk to them? Where did you go? How often do you go there? On and on the profile starts to become overwhelmingly invasive.
Right now it is extremely cheap and easy to collect and store the data but it's hard and expensive to cross reference and tabulate the data down to the individual. But in the extremely near future using AI and faster processers, data profiles for sale go from white men between 25 - 30, with this education level, and background like XYZ to -> John loves motorcycls and steak.
Suddenly your insurance premiums are way higher than your friends because you partake in dangerous activities and eat too much red meat. You get denied that loan because you invest in risky assets and it raises your risk factors to pay it back. That job that you applied to never responded because they already ran you through the algorithm and you don't fit the culture.
Protect your data and privacy now before its too late.

A lot of people in Maoist China also probably thought they weren't doing anything wrong
Just turn the phone off and leave it behind
Come back to it when you’re ready
There’s no other option
It will be waiting … patiently lol
When I realized this, this was pretty much the reason I got so into self-hosting everything I possibly can and have taken large efforts to de-Google myself and not use large corporate tech. It's also why at the bare minimum I'm always using a VPN or other sort of privacy technologies to connect to the general internet.
I understand that some people won't go to the same extremes that I have done. That's fine, but at least be aware of this fact. So many people act so blasé about it that it's genuinely concerning for me as I see the landscape of mainstream tech getting worse and worse.

And even if they never do any of the bad things with your data, normalize the fact that privacy is a right, it’s not a crime, it doesn’t mean you have something (bad) to hide.
*They* are in the wrong for invasive intrusion on your right to privacy and they should be rebuked.
Companies should be shamed and criminally prosecuted for collecting data without permission.
We need to go on offense.
Ghost is offering some of the best privacy advice on Nostr in recent memory. Read it.

privacy is not about hiding things, it is about not having te worry if you should be hiding something
yeah, this is such a lame response by people:
"I dOn'T cAre ABouT pRivAcY. IT dOEsN'T maTtER. i'M nOT dOiNg AnyThiNg wRonG."
the coming years it will become more apparent that privacy is key for everything we do! Changing laws and legislation, and societies turning technocratic bureaucratic hell holes. I guess it's necessary for things to change for the better ;)
Altenative strategy, probably more feasible for most people is to look average and keep only the "extreme" activity hidden.
The thing that 99% of the people say when you talk about privacy 🙈.

Well said. This is where we are going.
To me it looks like the point of return is already passed. Even if all internet users start caring for their privacy now, AI already has too much information. Who will pull the plug for ALL AI models?
That's exactly why you should use Monero whenever possible.
Monero, the king of privacy.

It's even worse than this because of how terrible the zeitgeist is on certain topics. Insurance premiums go up because you love to free solo dangerous cliffs? Ok, that's one thing. Insurance premiums go up because you don't eat according to the insanity of the food pyramid? That's a different thing entirely.
Would there be any interest in if I used one of the long form nostr publishers to put out a #privacytips or some such longform notes?
I don't want to promise something that I can't keep up with but at the same time its free so no one can really complain. #privacy

> So what? I don't care if Google knows I like motorcycles
I bet your insurance company does.
"Not doing anything wrong"
The question is wrong from who's perspective.
And as we know the goalposts of what is wrong are ever changing.
