 Yes agreed.  People generally trust science (that process of observation, hypothesis and testing). It is the bureaucracy around publicly-funded science that they don't trust. 
 You give people too much credit and i really struggle to put it any better than RFK already did.  It was the second part of RFK's reply to question "why do you continue to promote conspiracy theories?" ... the first part was something about his father.

I am reminded, though, of Orwell's 1984 where it came down to Big Brother being able to tell you how much 2+2 is ( rather than you determining it for yourself ).
