Plato's Republic is the single greatest book ever written. I wholeheartedly believe that. That's not to say that it's flawless, but it's beautiful, intelligent, funny, and sublime. 

Everyone must read it, multiple times in your lifetime if possible. But even if you only read it once or only halfway, you can't come away from it unchanged.
