 I think the problem is none of these NIPs or the implementations of them are as stable or as reliable as things like signal and Threema, nor as well designed. At the moment nostr is kinda a jack of all trades master of none type situation

 Everyone can have a relay, tho. Even on their cell phone.

 they can even be reachable from the internet via the use of a wireguard tunnel and DNS record

Do we get to just use a single protocol while clients compete amongst each other for features and userbase without creating walled gardens? Also yes.
