Go to Suriname while you can afford it; after Maya Parbhoe moves the country over to Bitcoin they're gonna be so rich it'll be like traveling to Switzerland. Costa Rica is really nice too from experience, and I hear fantastic things about Medellin from George Gammon. As for Mexico, really depends on how you're traveling. If I were going back it'd probably be to the south away from all the tourism and border areas, to see if I could help out and hang out with the EZLN. I went a good few times as a kid to the Yucatan region and then back to Cabo San Lucas a few years ago and it really put some reality to the geopolitical issues going on. Not saying you won't be safe, but it's a bit of a depressing way to spend a vacation, especially when you have kids coming up to you on the beach trying to sell you drugs -- especially when those kids are working for the police to shake down tourists.
