i don't like the xdg convention for server apps because you kinda want to be able to remember where to look for it when you install a fresh ubuntu server, it doesn't have a .config folder, this is mostly used by GUIs i could be mistaken but the D in XDG stands for "Desktop"
idk, I'm fedora person. .config is part of skell there afaik. but hey, no big deal at all. I'm just expressing my personal preference...
