That's just wrong. Somebody could just attack the server and push an infected "security upgrade" to thousands of computers. The upgrades needs to be confirmed at the user side, once the user knows it is safe to do so.
The amount of times when Ive come into the office, only for my pc to be freshly rebooted because those wankers at MS took it out of sleep and updated it... Closing all my apps in the process.
MS showing you who owns the computer.
Let me argue the other side. Yesterday, I had to install something for my boss on his laptop. Windows 11. It hadn’t been updated in almost six months. I’m not sure MS is swinging their dick at anyone. The majority of people are just stupid and require handholding. My work has not been interrupted by Windows Update in at least three years. I manually check and upgrade at least three times a week, on every machine in my purview.
Yeah, I hate rebooting because I have a bunch of different things open at all times. Only reason I keep windows around at work is because I need it for Adobe and 3D apps, otherwise I would run everything on Linux.

Surely there's a middle way between forced updates and no auto update at all. Ubuntu Server has automatic unattended security upgrades that works well. Surely desktops need that as well. Actually that's one of the reasons why they're replacing deb packages with Snaps - because of the built in auto updates.
