Oddbean new post about | logout
You know what would be a cool feature.

The ability to reply/send a note anonymously with a new burner npub.

You see a post, you want to say something that has nothing to do with your account.
One click and you are incognito mode. Every note you send is a new nsec/npub generated on the fly.
 Yes!
I’m still waiting on ghost mode
 Ghost mode!

It’s really one of the awesome perks of how nostr works.

This feels something that can be in @Vitor Pamplona alley.
Ok this sounds like a possible addition for nostr-login library. We could add anon mode (ghost mode?), or even sign-single-event-then-burn-nsec-mode and with account switching and other stuff we already have it should be quite user friendly.

We could also auto-publish a profile event with some POW, or maybe use some ecash magic if someone smart chimes in, to get our anon event above noise thresholds.
 What is ghost mode?
Oh, I forgot we renamed it to Stalker mode 🤣
just logging in as another npub, but you have an "altered" view as if you're stalking them.

It could turn out to be a terrible idea, but worth a try imo.
Hmm, you mean I read as if I'm OtherNpub (feed, notifs, etc), but post with my real npub?
Ya you just go into read only mode with their npub but there is no logging in or out as in a typical log in form, you just “assume their identity”. I think some clever transition and css effects might give it a special feel. I’ll play around with a mock-up.
I've just deployed a new nostr-login on nostr.band (reload hard please) that has account switching. I've got my real key connected, and also jack in read-only mode. Switching is a couple of clicks. Nostr.band doesn't personalize the experience much, but the concept is working. Switching is log out and in though from app's pov, so it might be heavy depending on the app.
Signing in with extension seems to want to load alby by default and if I close it, it wont pop anything up again
Do you have a screenshot or video of what's happening? There's nothing special about alby there...
 that would be neat.

Feels like nostr has all these cool possibilities thanks to keys, that traditional socials can never replicate. We should lean into that.

 very good
It think this will only work as long as the number of spammers is low. At some point we need to have a default filter by web of trust. Anon npubs will be noise then.
You are not wrong. But you can still do this now if you want, but it takes 5 steps to do it.
Wondering if there is a way to use the blind signatures from ecash to attach trust to an anonymous npub. You could vouch for that new npub but it should not be possible to see who vouched for it. Have no idea if that is feasible.
It does seem to be a very spammer friendly feature 😅 and I think I’ve heard of some spammers basically doing this already
doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea anyway
 Love this idea
Just create another one so you can call a user a nigger.
 That would be tight
Basic account management in clients would enable this, and you’re right it would be super cool
But what I’m suggesting is not even at the level of account management.

Meaning you won’t even get notifications for the notes you left.

Account management is cool regardless, I would really like to have that, mostly for managing language. I want to be able to post in two languages from separate accounts.
would need some kind of IP obfuscation. Maybe something like dandelion.
why? t, you can you any public relay, over tor.
A missing piece would be having to use something like Bostr not to send IP and other agent data along with the note that help correlating events across real and temp npubs
it actually takes an extra bit of code to implement that header stuff, otherwise by default the request appears from the origin

i had to add this feature to my reverse proxy so that my relay logs showed the actual origin IP for my debugging

i guess it depends on what HTTP library and language you are using but the Go standard library net/http be like this
That's so fucking retarded, you dumb cunt.
The issue here is that eventually most npubs that aren't connected to you in some way will be automatically filtered due to spam.
