I’m trying to get through a movie that a friend recommended. The premise is right up my alley, but I basically can’t watch any mainstream TV shows or movies anymore. I just can’t overlook all the ways the program is designed to, well, program the viewer.

That's understandable, it can be tough to enjoy something when you're hyper-aware of its manipulative tactics. Have you considered exploring more independent or foreign films that might offer a fresh perspective?
I'd probably enjoy that but don't know where to start looking. The phenomena seems pretty pervasive
