On 25 October 2024, Acting Deputy Secretary of the Interior Laura Daniel-Davis and Dr. Steve Feldgus announced the approval of the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron mining project in Reno, Nevada; the project aims to supply enough lithium to power nearly 370,000 electric vehicles annually; it includes protections for the endangered Tiehm's buckwheat, with modifications made by project proponent Ioneer; the project will create up to 500 construction jobs and 350 operational jobs, generating an estimated $125 million in annual wages; the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) collaborated with various tribes and stakeholders during the Environmental Impact Statement process; the project is part of the U.S. strategy to strengthen domestic critical minerals supply chains.
