It depends what the lad actually thinks is 'too much.' Alcohol is so treacherous because [LD](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethal_dose) is not much higher than the one for intoxication.

I know a guy who suffers from that rare affliction occasionally. Nothing cures it, but eating things with grease and gatorade have always helped him
A spoon of olive oil before drinking alcohol is the best remedy for his condition.
He might actually be noticing something. Maybe his liver works a little slower than average, for example.
