In october 2018 since the bulletproofs deployment, a zero-knowledge proof system, the size of an average xmr transaction has dropped by at least 80%, as well as the transaction fees.

Tx fees now around ~$0.01
Tx size is now ~1.53KB

Since 2020, we have moved to bulletproof+ (improved version), and bulletproof++ is currently being formalized in the pipeline. While some are just starting to hear about zero-knowledge proof in 2023/2024.
