People like to bag on "verified" #nostr addresses (nip-05) as being dumb. And there might be a valid argument for individuals. But I like that I can know @Proton Wallet is legit simply because they've verified an official domain.
Big this. Nostr address providers, maybe kinda sorta silly. Nip-05 domains owned by the actual entity, very valuable. nostr:nevent1qqs0r3asjl6rn8jjggchvyjxqmlsuke24d42j00kdul6pyjkfhadqncpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgtczyr2f4ypr5gwm5xeusvrv5d5m7vjrmz6yhrctd5gevcrl0vyep75d7qcyqqqqqqgqywcdc
I love what @brugeman is doing with npub.pro and @dtonon with Oracolo and @Alex Gleason 🐍 with Ditto - making it easy for people to have their own corner on Nostr will encourage more people to get their own NIP05 and expand the web of trust. It’s like a cypherpunk geocities/myspace hybrid forming here
Actually, bringing Nostr to the web can be dangerous in some countries, paradoxical as it may sound.
Why?
Due to the absurdity of the laws. They operate with concepts like "website," "followers," and so on. In Russia, for example, a relay would attract the attention of regulatory authorities if it had a web interface like Ditto, a client with a follower count, and support for encrypted chats. The first will cause you to receive letters demanding content removal. The followers will make you report voluntarily once their number exceeds 1,000 (this law, it seems, hasn't been passed yet because they realized how dumb it is). And encrypted chats mean prison.
Sure, in fact NIP-05 was recently updated to highlight also this edge case: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/05.md#identification-not-verification
