What do you mean by lottery mining? do I get it if I think that since technically I am losing on electricity and on the cost of the miner - I will never make it up mining in a pool. But I could mine solo and just might get a reward?
Plenty of people run full nodes of equivalent value for no economic benefit.

But not for direct economic benefit. However the more nodes on the network, the better off everyone is, same thing with these small miners. Every bit of hash, for profit or not, makes the network more distributed and ultimately more resilient, again to the benefit of us all.
