Buddha/Buddhists have valued 'non-attachment' for millennia.
The physical things you have, the social relationships all feed into one's self identity, which ultimately, is a delusion (because it's only really an idea). The you that you think is you, is not actually you (it's just an idea you carry around in your head) and since that idea is ultimately a delusion, fantasy or whatever, it can't actually own anything.
The reality of what everyone is, is a mystery to all of us. We get distracted by trying to answer the question, 'who am I?' when the deeper question is 'what am I? Focusing on understanding what you are brings liberation from idea of who you are and liberation from wanting that 'who' to fit in and find a place.
Let go of the 'self' (idea). Those who lose their lives (ie them-'selves') will find them (themselves).
