Wealth must first be created before it can be distributed. Therefore, printing money out of thin air only redistributes the little wealth of ordinary people to those who are closest to the money printers, but no new wealth is created. 

 Money is a tool helping decide how and where to use resources. Messing with the money makes the money less effective. The economy becomes distorted, confused and corrupted.
