Relays are essentially algorithms/feeds or networks that you can subscribe to, allowing you to see the contents from those networks. You can kinda pick and choose between them depending on the level of privacy that you want, and if you're crafty you can create your own too.

https://primal.net tends to be pretty popular on desktops/web while Damus tends to be popular on mobile devices. I'm writing to you from primal while it looks like you're connected to ones like Damus.

Culturally, things are mostly open-source here so hacking away will help you a lot with engineers and designers (which is why you're here already) and generally we follow a "verify, don't trust" philosophy since we're dealing with Bitcoin and software.
