 The purpose of the trial is to make an example out of someone and intimate everyone else by showing openly that they can destroy anyone's life at any time for any reason. See Soviet show trials. 

The reason for the intimidation is because they're a weak and pathetic minority, and if a significant number of people pushed back they'd be finished in no time. So they have to make sure that never happens.

 That makes sense.  Oppression is unnatural and requires constant vigilance to maintain.  Fiat will fail by attrition and all the plebs piling up like small cracks in the dam.

 also, anyone who has spent a decent amount of time in eastern europe will have heard stories and even directly experienced the culture of passive resistance that succeeds in stopping their bullshit

 Absolutely, once the money they print to pay the jackboots to enforce their "laws" no longer buys anything, the jackboots go elsewhere. And the totalitarians are left exposed as the weak and pathetic people they are.
