As Prof. John Curtice observes (after his latest polling), showing around 80% of likely labour voters are pro-EU: 'Labour does have to realise it will find itself back in office off the back of an electorate that is three-to-one in favour of joining the EU'. Whether or not this means #Labour may be thinking about how to re-engage with the #EU, rejoining, of course, is not something we can just wish to happen, the EU would need to agree & that willingness is hardly a foregone conclusion!
@43d7c4ea It's a lot easier to believe that we'd be pushing at an open door when you read Michel Barnier and Guy Verhofstadt's commentaries.
@43d7c4ea there are so many low-hanging fruit of EU cooperation that a Labour government could start to participate in. And just talking to EU without drama for four years would be very meaningful. If Starmer is clever he'll make sure to first of all join all the EU packages of support for Ukraine, like Norway has, because it'll be hard for the right-wing to criticise that.
@43d7c4ea The EU problem for Labour for a long time was that 1) The majority of Labour voters were pro-EU 2) The majority of Labour constituencies were pro-Brexit That's no longer true. I had Momentum insiders tell me they couldn't possibly come out and be anti-Brexit because it would destroy them in the Labour Heartlands. That wasn't true even then. But they believed it.
