Absolutely. This reminds me of the great series The Colony which was terminated after 2-3 seasons. I was disappointed that there were actual aliens in the story - it would have been a more interesting plot twist if the aliens were just made up in order to lock down the planet. If we ever hear of an alien invasion, I'm going to assume it's a totalitarian power grab.
