 Just came back from Spain

I am stunned with how bad they are with english - it’s embarrassing

People working in hospitality not only do not speak any english but the level of arrogance and how unwelcoming they are is just ridiculous

On the other hand - people not working in hospitality are so friendly

I don’t think I will be coming back
Why would Spanish people speak English?
Why would anyone speak English really?
You go to a country with its own language and complain they don't speak yours. You want something from them you adjust, not the other way around...
Maybe because they would like to meet and talk to other people who don’t speak Spanish or maybe because tourism is something they care about or maybe because it’s just a sign of good education
The same points could be made when asking why you don't speak Spanish? ...when you're literally in Spain.
True I speak three languages and would love to learn Spanish but that is not the point. Learning and speaking different languages is virtue. Being egocentric and thinking that everyone who comes to your country should speak your language is just stupid
Sure, it's a balance. If there is no common language between two people, ego has to be let go of on both sides in order to get anywhere with communication.
Good point. I used to think that all the countries that force their language on TV and audio sync all the TV programs is the main reason people are bad at English but Germany and Austria are proof that this is not the case. After all English is the mostly used common language especially in business and tourism
