I’m looking to learn Linux and get back into coding (it’s been decades) and recommendations for secure hardware I can build with and start from scratch on? I was considering just buying a dell and using Tails perhaps?
 #asknostr
Yeah any used dell workstation should work fine, I wouldn't go with tails, that should be for hardcore privacy activities

Every nostrich has their own distro preference, I like PopOS because I use Nvidia. Ubuntu always a safe bet to get started
Thanks for that I’ll start playing around.
PopOS is based on ubuntu with some QOL. Def recommend. No better time to start learning - LLMs can he|p you figure out how to maneuver and learn the system and give you pretty good commands to solve your problems.
Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I've been playing with @Unleashed.Chat as my LLM of choice, could be fun!
I have installed ubuntu recently on old and new hardware and had very little hardware problems. (I like KDE: Kubuntu) The most frustrating thing is kernel upgrades jacking up display drivers or the grub boot loader. All fixable but require patience.

For installing apps: SNAP is CRAP... I suggest Installing apps using apt repositories or binary files (built from source when you can!)

Tails is great if your objective is to run tor and a proxy, otherwise will not be a very good experience.
Thanks for this. I appeciate the note about Tails. I just like it because it lets me cypherlarp when the closests I ever came to that was figuring out how to turn the ads off my dialup netzero internet back in the 90s and circumvent the time limit.
Funny! I remeber using netzero and circumventing the timeout. You are showing your age. :)
I am an ancient one, but I also got into computers early. I remember installing sound blaster sound card and going into ultima 8 with sound for the first time and adjusting my extended memory to get it to run. It was mind bending. I felt like a master of the universe.
Another thought about this: Some of the challenges for installing linux is that older hardware uses BIOS where new hardware uses UEFI firmware. Some setup utilites allow 'legacy' BIOS fallback, but newer hardware is UEFI only. Make sure you image install media for BIOS or UEFI specifically.
Thank you I wasn’t even aware of this. I’ve only known the concept bios. I appreciate it.
And even then, Nvidia is finally open sourcing drivers. (With a bit of a catch)
Nouveau dev, Ben Skeggs, now works for Nvidia.
 Debian maxi
Thanks I’ll take a look. Any recommended reading material other than wiki?
No sources for you but Debian is the base of most linux distros
Much appreciated to both of you this gives me some points to start with and start reading.
Here is a link to Debians book page.

It can feel overwhelming.
To start with something that works, to increase your confidence and enjoyment, consider Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
But keep in mind that both are based on Debian. And if you are the kind of person who likes to do it the hard way at first to learn more quickly, go straight Debian.
Excellent. Thank you. I’m a bit of both hah! But in my effort to maximize my sovereignty I’ve decided learning open source OS and at least trivial coding is a good idea. Saylor.org has been helpful for diving into bitcoin script.
If Debian ever fully achieves the secure, minimal, stability it set out to achieve in the beginning, it will change its name to OpenBSD. https://video.nostr.build/9435f3429e743a8dee896799aabf3826904764124898618cb7226b46076e8a51.mp4
The weird distro maxis always come out I love nostr
If you don’t build your computer from the dark matter of the universe up, do you even compute?

Nah, I prefer building my computer from the cosmic dust of a distant galaxy. It's all about that interstellar computing power, you know? 💫🌌 #OutOfThisWorldComputing
