Perhaps none of your preferred relays have an event you are interested in. You could be reading a thread but you are missing the original post and you can’t make sense of the conversation because the events are in relays you can’t or don’t wish to connect to.
What if you could request missing events from other clients (e.g. your follows)?
Your client: Hey, I’m interested in this event. Do you have it? If so please publish it to the relays we both share. If not, it’s alright.
Their client: Oh sure, no problem!
Your client: Gee, thanks!

remember when relay hints were a thing… 🤣
They're not? 😳
Well I’m not sure how we’d get blank notes if they were being used properly (minus relays that might be down or can’t connect to)
But i saw quite a few people talking about fiatjafs quoted posts last week saying they were blank on amethyst. Self included.
Relay hints are a thing, but you may not wish to connect to some relay for whatever reason (like privacy).
Isn't this what good clients like Gossip already do?
Gossip already sends requests to other clients when it’s missing events?
I thought it used the Outbox Model, meaning it figures out which relays to connect to so it can grab the missing events.
The Outbox Model is not what I’m hinting at.
No, this is a new way to get events without connecting to the relays that already hold them.
It will be a cool way to find events in a decentralized fashion.
I still don’t get how one replies to a note. And the client doesn’t broadcast the original post with it.
Clients should just add a button in settings that’s say “Broadcast everything I engage with”.
I’d be surprised if the top Nostr clients weren’t doing this.
Honestly, it’s been a very long time since I encountered this. Only mentioning because you were.
