It is important to mention at this point the defeat of Lampião in Mossoró on June 13, 1927. The mayor of the city, Rodolfo Fernandes, knowing that he could not count on the protection of the police or the army to defend the citizens from the bandits, took a courageous and intelligent action: certain that Lampião would come with his gang to attack and plunder the wealthy city of Mossoró, he ordered the removal of the elderly, children and women from the city, and armed about 300 volunteers who were willing to fight, distributing them in strategic points, such as church towers and rooftops. When the bandits arrived, confident that they would have another easy target ahead of them, they were greeted by a hail of bullets, and shortly thereafter they retreated and fled, never to return.
