>playing past IV
Civilization's science minister was an old white dude in a white jacket. Little bit too modern of an aesthetic for an enlightenment idea that is no longer with us, but it was at least an honest representation.
Civilization V's science minister was a black guy in a turban. A decision guided by representation. Thirteen years before pronouns, black mold was already in the industry.
I was memeing the law and order gamergate episode
That's really nitpicking. Besides, Civilization is the kind of game who actually benefits from real diversity of cultures for gameplay reasons. I enjoy both Civ V (mostly with the Vox Populi mod) and VI and never felt the games were preachy about muh diversity despite the obvious market pitches about female leaders and blah blah.

Besides, you can always create a map and specifically play to genocide whatever people you seem formidable (although, since Civ V doesn't allow you to raze conquered City States, you can't just raze Tel-Aviv - you can still nuke it).
