Imagine a glass prism. A slit of light shines into one side of the prism and is split into its component wavelengths so that various coloured lights come out the other side.
Now take that, and instead of the slit of light, it is a lightning payment. This single lightning payment is split up and is routed to a number of receivers rather than just a single receiver.
