 I tried to runs Bitcoin node. I suppose the failure was purchasing a HDD instead of an SSD. it was so slow downloading. then somehow I bricked the drive.
idk I gave up.
should I go drop $150 and get that SSD and get back on the horse?

I should say, I've installed Ubuntu Linux on old computers, flashed custom roms back in the day to android phones, so I'm not a complete tech noob.

 I have a node running on spinning rust. It can take a really long time to download and verify the Blockchain though I've never had it kill an HDD before. I've only downloaded it once and just bootstrap each new implementation so I don't have to go through that again.
