I think there are probably even more messageboards of geographic regions/communities which are going strong. You just don't hear about them perhaps unless you were in that location. (No reason why you would). There is a Brixton one actually you just reminded me of, that seems to still be going

 don't think it was all that popular, gumtree seems to be the more popular equivalent
