Maybe they emailed a developer for help without knowing what it was and got a no or something like that. I doubt it's a lie unless they're just trying to seem counterculture. 

 I'm guessing that cardano and arweave are offering them money, it's something they do so that more projects build on them and they can claim they are decentralized (legal loophole).
