I told myself I wouldn't buy into meshtastic until the devices can do something cooler than instant messaging, like bulletin boards or something
It's been on my mind recently with the two hurricanes that just hit the southeast United States back to back and did lots of damage, especially in North Carolina. I've also been an amateur radio operator for several years and this just looks like a more modern version of amateur radio. If I'm understanding correctly, this thing has a 3-hop maximum, and that sounds very similar to APRS on 2 meters 144.390mhz.
3 hops is default, but it can be moved up to 7 I believe.

This is with the default 3.

Okay, so the receiver point and the final broadcast point in this picture do not show numbers where I believe APRS on amateur radio. The first node that receives it automatically decrements it to the number two before sending it on. So it would not go as far, at least if I understand correctly.
 #Meshtastic does #bbs.

 Love the cyberdeck

Ultra secure cyberdecks + mesh networks + ecash markets
even better will be when these run lightning... if you just add this QoS field to LN nodes it would be possible to make them more tolerant of being out of reach and also to be able to directly contact via LoRa or Meshtastic or whatever

ecash still requires connections to mint nodes and there is a potential for in mesh networks with LN for you to have a private channel with all your regular business associates so you literally even can just hook up to their wifi and zap them

it just requires the LN node to have an understanding of intermittent and long-time-disconnected states being ok
 Interesting
ugh now I'm gonna have to buy two of these why would you do this to me
 #Meshtastic also works with #js8call

there's very lovely old school BBS functionality available via NomadNet via #reticulum. check it out!
exactly. reticulum is much cooler than Meshtastic.

I also love Meshtastic of course, but just the scale of things you can do with Reticulum is completely different.
