 Hi #privacy enthusiasts,

It seems like the EU is more and more undemocratically (no referendums EU, you are not representing the people's will...) clamping down on privacy with the ChatControl measure: https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/posts/chat-control/

My question is what do you recommend as an alternative?

1. XMPP
2. Element/Matrix
3. Signal
4. Threema
5. Jami
6. Anything else?

I'm a bit out of the loop and was wondering what do you recommend?

Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Checking it out.

I just remembered that it would be especially useful to find something useful for groups.

There's some Telegram groups that will perhaps need to be exported eventually and I was wondering where will everybody go?

Thanks again!
Can create private groups in Briar and others you listed.

Most don't care about privacy and censorship resistance even today, including criminals. That's why they were using rubbish, such as telegram.

Like locust, they shall go everywhere there's something "free as in beer" and least effort.

Seems irrelevant where locust go, as long as it's not your field, unless monetising them somehow.

Here in Asia, majority use other mass surveillance rubbish - WeChat, Line, Viber, Whatapp, Zallo - wherever their gangsterment runs the herd.🐑🐑🐑
They've never even heard of the ones we use, and would not switch now.

Only ignorant and lazy people used telegram as their main messenger. "Play stupid games; win stupid prizes!"🙃
Matrix. No centralized server that collects everyone's phone numbers in a huge database, true multi-device support, you get to choose your client, and much more popular than XMPP.

Nothing is perfect, but Matrix is good and continuing to get better.

If they get their p2p Matrix support to be reliable and easy to use, that'd be **amazing**!

Yeah, by the way, if I have a home server running Matrix I can easily connect to everyone else's server also right?

So I could run MatrixServer.org for my friends/family/group and then they could use this account to access other groups too right?

Thanks!
Agencies can still monitor us before any data is encrypted. This can make using such tools seem suspicious and increase our vulnerability to scrutiny. I don't use any of the tools you mentioned and have no intention of doing so. This fear-based narrative needs to be challenged, whether it comes from political authorities or government agencies. We need to push back against this fearmongering.
I like #simplex and #matrix, preferably self-hosted. But something to consider regarding chat control:
It is useless if you use these messengers on stock google or apple OS because the chat control can intervene before the encryption takes place. That's why it's important to use an #opensource OS like #GrapheneOS and not use Google services at all.
#privacy is not a crime!
I see, I see. Thanks, that's great to know.
 Signal
It does need a phone number though, is that correct?
 Checkout #DeltaChat.
using #nostr through #tor seems to be fairly ok for #privacy too
the easiest option by far is web client through tor browser,
#grapheneos and tor-native app surely too
 maybe add #onion relays
maybe paid ones to keep spam at bay
and if paid then in #monero
We still really need a non-javascript nostr client with people hosting copies of it on .onion addresses
#nostrudel can be hosted on #oonion.
It is even included in #start9
 It relies on javascript
Should not be a problem if self-hosted?
Not sure honestly, don't know enough
 Or use #whonix wherever

SimpleX, XMPP or Session all over Tor with your own server or node.
All of them. Assume all will be breached over time. Resilience in comms is better than hoping one works over time.
I just installed simpleX on my phone. I intend to see what it is doing. Currently I use signal but the fact that is linked to my phone number makes me wonder
