Instinctively you reply, 
     "thank you for your service,"
      in a sweet, appreciative voice.

Starting to blink my mind screams.

I feel shame.
     One step at a time —
I am disgusting.
     People love me —
I risked my life for nothing.
     I am healing —
I was everything I hate,
     It's OK to feel sad,
     I got through this day —
a weapon of the state. 
     That is not me — anymore.

Inhaling calmly the blink ends.
Awkwardly—
absurdly—
I say, "thank you."
