I think the issue boils down to juxtaposition of character. Real men and “beta” men differ on integrity. A real man is going to be  kind, protective, attentive, and generous but those things will come out naturally. 

Betas project those things but it’s a fascade. They’re nice instead of kind, aggressive instead of protective, hypersexual instead of doting, and bombastic instead of generous.  Yes, it comes down to authenticity. Some people are and some people play a role. People can sense this and the respect is adjusted accordingly. Try hard is an insult for a reason.
