Okay, so now I've tried Tutanota and Proton for an alternative to Gmail.
I like neither.
Tutanota was not great. I've talked about that in an upcoming blog post.
Proton has given me nothing but trouble with DNS. I can't receive mail from any outside account and have no clue what's going on. The DNS says that everything has cleared, but still no incoming direct mail. Maybe doing something wrong, but I don't know what it would be.
I do like the web UI of Proton better and I like the app better. Tutanota's UI was not good at all.
@74178bce I switched to Fastmail and now it’s basically one of my most important services now. The 1Password integration for masked emails is the killer feature
@74178bce That's odd for sure, I've never had any issues with Proton. You're using the web interface and not a third-party mail reader? You mention DNS - I guess that means you're trying to set it up with your own domain?
@74178bce Proton is quite expensive, so I assume they'd have decent documentation and customer support? 🤷
@74178bce how long ago did you set the DNS records? ..even though DNS propagation usually happens within an hour or two, it can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate
@74178bce Given how important email is, I am always amazed how poor the GUIs are and bad the functionalities. The setup of proton mail with thunderbird on Ubuntu was doable but scary in a fun sort of way with the bridge thingy. Is it because there is no money in it? Seems a big gap in FOSS to me.
