The Anthropocene Epoch is a proposed name for the current period of geologic time, in which human activities have significantly altered Earth’s surface, atmosphere, oceans, and nutrient cycling systems. The term is derived from Greek and means the “recent age of man”. The Anthropocene Epoch should start in 1950, coinciding with the Atomic Age and the Great Acceleration of socioeconomic and Earth system trends.
