Imagine registering for a new account in your favorite Nostr client and instead of getting the boring global trending, you are presented with posts from your city/neighborhood.

That's where we are going.
 That’s beautiful 💜
I like that for local community building. Have you used nostr:nprofile1qqsdvl5ghyne55mzdj0hzmyhvuv26fzughl7y333r9py6xdnf0uyttqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qyg8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnhd9hx2qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucnpdejz7ux0msg at all?
Yep. It's basically onboarding with the local community first in the hopes that less trash is available.
Never heard of that one, will check it out.
Nostr es más valioso cuando la red de contactos se teje desde la comunidad local, a medida que se expande el uso del protocolo la confianza entre usuarios cobra más sentido y fuerza desde la comunidad local.

Will this require people to give up their location data or would it be an option thing where we can look at different cities feeds?
No way am I giving up my location data to a bunch of pseudonymous relays.
 No need to.
Are you suggesting that this would work without knowing my location? Just geo-fencing IP addresses or something? I also use a VPN
Yeah. You can just connect to a local relay.

Or you can connect to a global relay and search for posts from a city/state/country, depending on how many posts you want. Obviously that filter can be from anywhere, it doesn't necessarily mean you are in those locations.
Oh, OK. I see what you mean. This was an idea I had for a fediverse instance, once upon a time. I never really invested that much time into fedi, though. I didn't like that you couldn't transfer accounts between instances easily. Much more promising for Nostr. Unfortunately, I don't have the free time that I had back then.
Also, unless you are using Tor for everything, you are already giving your location to relays.
Tell me you want my location data without saying you want my location data. . .

You pushed "normalizing tor" and now this. Wouldn't doxing my neighborhood cancel out most of the benefits of using tor?
I should mention I'm actually all for it as long as it's optional. Reminds me of freedom cells. Even nextdoor has been beneficial after some recent disasters in my area. Neighbors helping each other with supplies and what not.
As LibertyImp asked, would this require people to give up their location data? Could people just make accounts representing cities/towns in a decentralized manner, and others could view notes directed toward those accounts? For example, someone makes an account for Boston, others post messages directed to the Boston account of events they are advertising that are going to take place in Boston, and still others view the messages directed to the Boston account when they want to see what is going on in the city. A method like this would also allow people to keep up to date with areas that are not their local areas, and wouldn't require them to give up location data.
 🙌
 Hard pass
Need more geo tagging for this to work
We will have more of them as soon as we ship it.
I always find that super creepy. I mean i know my devices leak my position from country level all the way up to centimeter accuracy. I mean i know you can do that but somehow i don't want it to be rubbed in my face like that.

Besides that would mean that you would need to keep some kind of status of where a person resides. There is no metadata in my messages that should reveal my location, so how can new users know they are my neighbours?
Can this be easily disabled, beyond switching on the for settings (opt vs opt out). I know we leak locations to the relays, but its seems like this feature will advertise our general locations to everyone else. I don't know if I love that.
 No.

Nip 29 could work, but we can also just do geotagged kinds 1s in the default relays. The key part is helping people to setup the feed and to help them post exclusively to locations like on https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1233
Yes, groups/relays are only a part of the solution, the general idea is to offer proximity of language/geolocation.
