TikTok swipe behavior is so addictive. You can open the app knowing you’re be hooked and try to stop a minute in and then spend 30 minutes swiping. I don’t know exact what’s happening but it’s brain hijacking. Very weird.
Part of the reason I stay away from apps like that, privacy problems aside. The addictive nature of apps like that was not something I wanted to get involved in.

I had that problem with Instagram and Twitter reels.
 💯

Was recently shown the app by a friend and you can just feel it creeping in your head.

Must be what it feels like to touch the one ring
Yea the same thing on Instagram
I just create content and upload on there, only one I browse is ig reels when I'm looking for content to give me ideas for mine
 For real. Very dangerous.
My favorite thing about Nostr is that there is not an algorithm hijacking my brain.
it’s not weird; it works according to plan
Ever wondered why opening loot boxes in video games had these elaborate over the top animations with lots of bright colors and effects? It's for the same reason. It's designed to trigger dopamine release in the brain. Keeps ya hooked
Good book on how to engineer social media addiction

I got on the YouTube app last night on my phone (rare for me tbh) and found myself watching some YouTube shorts and the same shit that TikTok does started happening to me. I lost like 25 mins so quickly! Felt borderline non-consensual!!! I'm staying away from it 😩
I love shorts! Wear them in the summer mostly. No, but seriously, I try to avoid them as well.
It's the same feeling as smoking.

You know you are falling but can't stop.
 🧡🤟💂‍♂️
The first clips will create a dopamine loops based on created emotions, it can be whatever, even a disgust. Then the loops will get connected to the physical movement, the swipe. It can be a sound (pornhub, netflix, phone vibration).
Then slowly the loop will move before the swipe, so the expectation of the swipe and the potential emotion will be enough to release the dopamine.
But over time the amount of dopamine decrease and you’ll have to swipe more and more often to squeeze something.
And the algo just makes sure to keep you in doing that based on their retention metrics.
Yeah the “disgust” emotion is used quite often in cover images. Along with angry and surprised. I personally can’t stand it because I understand why they are doing this for the click - trying to manipulate my attention.
It not work with me, I tried it many times but I still didn't addict it 🤣, deleted after few minutes
I’m afraid the knowledge isn’t enough. The brain is prone to addiction, since it’s a highly effective system also for all the beneficial regular stuff we do. Alcoholics who do fight that can’t have a sip until the end of their lives. That strong system it is. A nice book about how it is for the addict on a socially accepted drug wrote Matty Perry from The Friends, before he died. Usually books on addiction are about hard drug addicts and I never felt the connection, but this one got me.
