My experience with Vietnam, more than any other place, is that it gives back whatever attitude you give it. If you're friendly and respectful, you'll be overwhelmed with welcome and kindness. I try to be discreet where possible and lead with a smile when my presence is unavoidable. The biggest challenge is trying to find a polite way to turn down all the invitations to sit and drink. I'm not young enough to say, "Yes!" to all of those anymore.
