If your preferred theory makes it hard for you to communicate with large sections of your field, there's probably a major problem with your theory, at least in socially pragmatic terms.
What one needs is a principle of intellectual plenitude, to maximize one's resonances.
Historical forces are at work. Despite not being convinced by any anti-representation arguments, I find myself replacing 'represent' with 'mediate' wherever it fits. :P

Perhaps the highest degree of the terms in the equations matters too?
There is a loose sense in which a model with nonlinear terms is more complex than one with only linear terms, right?
dx/dt = -a x
vs
dx/dt = - a x ^ 2
Both have the same number of free parameters, but arguably the second is more complex?
