I think most of it is very easy to implement in Nostr but the real layer which is missing is a way for machine learning to pick which notes to display based on user activity and engagement. That’s buildable and a lot easier/cheaper than it was when TikTok or even IG reels were developed. But we have no way to bundle up user engagement data and send it to a trusted algorithm service. We could do a DVM or custom relay to display the content based on the algorithm service.
The other issue to address is that TikTok and its clones are very optimized for performance with incredible low latency uptime. You need a good CDN and really optimized clients.
There’s a great book by @9df064a5 about this very thing. “Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires”

I moved to New Zealand and I think it is a pretty amazing place to be, especially with the rise of authoritarianism and climate change. Not because it’s a good place to build a bunker in the remote mountains of the South Island. Aotearoa New Zealand is a place with incredibly high trust, even with political divides the politics and culture here is cooperative. Sure the natural resources are tremendous and the place is isolated, but that’s not what makes it work. What makes it work is people see the humanity in each other and believe that’s more important than anything else.
Why aren’t we doing more stuff with Nostr and Tidal? It’s really cool, they launched it back in June, I’ve seen it pop up a few times but we should do more with it.
Like make ‘share a song’ more a feature in the app and auto login with your nsec when you see events with Tidal content.

Interesting, the fivethirtyeight predictions for the presidential election results are trailing the prediction markets. Trump passed Harris as the predicted winner on October 9th in the markets and October 18th in the 538 prediction.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2024-election-forecast/
Cause or effect? The methodology of the 538 prediction is tha they’re NOT using prediction markets.
The polls often all skew one way or the other but it’s not always for one party or another. In 2020 and 2016 they skewed towards the republicans but in 2022 they were wrong the other direction.

Nate Silver sold 538 and doesn’t work there any more. The 538 site is run by a team at ESPN.
Plenty on the left aren’t happy with him either btw. But it doesn’t matter when referring to 538 today because he’s no longer involved.
Interesting, dev tried to build group chat style app on top of ATprotocol and found it was too slow to work. I’ve always been amazed at how fast Nostr is but I haven’t yet seen a clear thing that is performance related that works on Nostr and not ATProtocol.

Apparently they aren’t going to tell me anything about what or why I violated their community guidelines. But by verifying my email and phone number I’m ok now. All very odd since I’m already a verified user with 2fa and an associated Facebook account that’s been active for 19 years.
I’m pretty sure it’s because of the CCTV footage I posted over the weekend.

It’s called brigading. You basically get a bunch of people to file a ton of reports about anything that could remotely be a violation at any time in the past. Then you only need one to be accepted and the reviewers are working with a couple seconds at most to make the decision.
It got restored after KYC which was odd. I still have no idea what they think I did to violate their community standards. I was already a a verified user on Instagram so I don’t know why they made me redo KYC.
The German government has setup a sovereign tech fund. It will fund open source technology because “the open source ecosystem serves as the foundation for society's innovative strength, competitiveness and democracy. Digital sovereignty is the self-determined use of digital technologies and systems by individuals, industry, and governments. “

What did JFK do that was great? He tried and failed to invade Cuba. He set off the Cuban missile crisis and nearly started a nuclear war. Other than that, being charismatic, and getting assassinated…..
And Teddy Roosevelt…. Mostly he invaded other countries and made the US in to a colonial power. To his credit, his invasion of Cuba worked when JFKs didn’t.
Trump got almost no legislation passed. Trump did fund lots of vaccine research and funding. He deserves some credit for that. But mostly it’s substance-less bluster. He’s got a very short attention span and seems like a narcissist. Now I don’t like his politics, so I’m glad he’s no Orban or Erdoğan, right wing leaders who are actually good at governing. I fear he will have the same permanent and dysfunctional effect on American politics that Perón had on Argentina. Through nationalism and strong man politics took a wealthy first world country and destroyed it.
I honestly don’t get why people support Trump. Even if you’re right wing, loving his policies, don’t you want someone who’s honest or at least competent?
I find it fascinating that you truly honestly believe it is true. There’s little point in arguing the exact points because neither of us is likely to change our minds.
Nice to see. Somehow I thought ditto already had that since nip46 remote signing seems to be most aligned with how ditto works.
How do you post with a mastodon client connecting to ditto without nip46 to sign the content?
Third time this has happened this year. This is the first time I caught it on video, unfortunately they knew there was a security camper and covered their faces.

In New Zealand I’m pretty sure the All Blacks flag is the local straight pride flag. It doesn’t bother me at all. In fact I think nobody should be shamed for their sexuality or gender, so straight people shouldn’t be ashamed either.
This time I had a backup flag pole and flag in waiting. As long as they keep tearing it down I’ll keep putting it back up.
I often see people stopping to comment on or admire the flag as they walk along the waterfront and I think having it up does a tiny bit to help make society a bit more inclusive.

Well there’s a lot of people who blame society’s problems on queer people. Scapegoating a minority is a good way to distract people from systemic problems. The church has engaged in systemic protection of priests who abuse children, so let’s redirect the legitimate anger at kids being hurt at some other group.
Concerned about how your real inflation adjusted wages haven’t gone up since the 1970’s? Blame immigrants and Jewish bankers as opposed to central banks and the monetary system.
Often the most extreme homophobic and transphobic attacks come from people who are themselves queer and hate that part of themselves. So they lash out at others who aren’t self-hating and try and prove their straightness to themselves and others.
Look. If you’re happy with your gender then enjoy it. If you find yourself attracted to the people society says you are supposed to be attracted to, then that’s awesome. You’ve avoided a lot of unnecessary trauma.
I think the biggest issue would be a lot of relays are run as single instances without load balancing / replication. Strfry supports it but I doubt it’s being done. And then the search relays are similarly scalable but not setup for it.
We faced something like it with the spam stress tests a few weeks ago. And we discovered the servers stay up but we are vulnerable to a sophisticated attack on the network.
The Bluesky team has an academic paper describing the protocol that’s a pretty good high level but somewhat technical overview. It includes how they see Bluesky compares to Secure Scuttlebutt, Nostr, Farcaster, and ActivityPub/Mastodon.
I think folks who are building Nostr apps or advocating for it in comparison to Bluesky would do well to read it to understand what they’re doing and how we’re different.
We should also write up one for Nostr.

Also to be clear the NZ system spends less per capita from the government budget on health care than is spent in the US. We have a much more effective system without the excessive paperwork of the American system. And yes there’s private hospitals and health insurance here and even pharmaceutical advertising. It’s really not very different from America, it just works a lot better. Lower taxes, better security, more benefits.
Language isn’t just a set of words and grammar. It’s also very tied to culture. I think we need to make it much easier to find content by language than just make it easy to translate everything.
Why do you think Jack Dorsey is involved? He left the board and didn’t take equity. He also did grants to Nostr and some fediverse stuff too but didn’t make it an investment. Wouldn’t you want billionaires donating money for open source open protocols without trying to own it?
