The Mexican bush sage was full of activity and drama. This hummingbird quietly fed nearby at a little patch of Grevillea. I can relate—will avoid crowds whenever possible.

I’m in Gaviota and was able to get this slo mo of a dragonfly landing on its perch. I think it’s a meadowhawk. The slo mo on my camera requires me to pre-focus and then hope it’s capturing at just the right moment so this took awhile.

And I guess that’s what photography is, isn’t it? “Out of everything I see in front of me at this moment, what draws my attention?” It’s the same whether it’s a butterfly or your smoothie or your friend.

Here’s another photo where the light lets you see the interesting ways the raven’s feathers refract. There’s black, blue, purple, and even brown.

Another Halloween bird, a silky southwestern specialty sometimes known as the goth cardinal, the Phainopepla.
