Ch. 28, The Screwtape Letters
The long, dull, monotonous years of middle-aged prosperity or middle-aged adversity are excellent campaigning weather. You see, it is so hard for these creatures to persevere. The routine of adversity, the gradual decay of youthful loves and youthful hopes, the quiet despair (hardly felt as pain) of ever overcoming the chronic temptations with which we have again and again defeated them, the drabness which we create in their lives and the inarticulate resentment with which we teach them to respond to it—all this provides admirable opportunities of wearing out a soul by attrition.
If, on the other hand, the middle years prove prosperous, our position is even stronger. Prosperity knits a man to the World. He feels that he is 'finding his place in it', while really it is finding its place in him. His increasing reputation, his widening circle of acquaintances, his sense of importance, the growing pressure of absorbing and agreeable work, build up in him a sense of being really at home in earth, which is just what we want. You will notice that the young are generally less unwilling to die than the middle-aged and the old.
The truth is that the Enemy (God), having oddly destined these mere animals to life in His own eternal world, has guarded them pretty effectively from the danger of feeling at home anywhere else. That is why we must often wish long life to our patients; seventy years is not a day too much for the difficult task of unravelling their souls from Heaven and building up a firm attachment to the earth.
While they are young we find them always shooting off at a tangent. Even if we contrive to keep them ignorant of explicit religion, the incalculable winds of fantasy and music and poetry-the mere face of a girl, the song of a bird, or the sight of a horizon—are always blowing our whole structure away. They will not apply themselves steadily to worldly advancement, prudent connections, and the policy of safety first. So inveterate is their appetite for Heaven that our best method, at this stage, of attaching them to earth is to make them believe that earth can be turned into Heaven at some future date by politics or eugenics or 'science or psychology, or what not. Real worldliness is a work of time-assisted, of course, by pride, for we teach them to describe the creeping death as good sense or Maturity or Experience. Experience, in the peculiar sense we teach them to give it, is, by the by, a most useful word. A great human philosopher nearly let our secret out when he said that where Virtue is concerned 'Experience is the mother of illusion'; but thanks to a change in Fashion, and also, of course, to the Historical Point of View, we have largely rendered this book useless.

Many are talking about inheritance of Bitcoin these days.
What many aren’t talking about is that the commonly used inheritance solutions only convey possession NOT legal title.
So your Bitcoin still gets to go through the public probate process 🙃. That’s no bueno.

Right, I’m sure it’s due to the containment levels of treated water, but it still blows my mind a bit.

We know that God gives us free will and he does so through love (which he himself is) by the ascension of his son, Jesus Christ.
Before ascending back to heaven, Jesus tells us that it is better for us that he should leave. Why is that?
Because by ascending, he not only then can send his Holy Spirit down upon the apostles, which is now our inheritance, he then allows us to live by and in faith.
If Jesus were to remain on earth then we would not live by faith. We would live by force. If God dwelt among us and that was known, all would eventually have no choice but to surrender to him. That is not free will, that is slavery.
God does not desire us to be his slaves, but his sons.
By ascending, he shows that he grants us free will to choose him and he does this because he loves us.
You cannot love someone whom you force to love you, as that is not love. Love must be freely given & received.
In the ascension Jesus gives us a glimpse of the essence of love.
Once we, freely, make the choice to love God, he grants us an outpouring of his love via the Holy Spirit.
It is better for us that this happens, instead of Christ being here, because him ascending back to heaven is the only way in which we are able to then live as Christ desires us to.
The primary reason physical training of some sort is so impactful for the Christian is that the training mimics what it’s like to follow Christ so well.
In training, there are few low days, even fewer high days, but there’s a ton of nothing days. Not high, not low, just go out and do it.
We can use the same mindset used throughout this training to (correctly) continue turning towards God when, for the most part, it feels like nothing.
Of course in reality it’s not nothing, in training or holiness, but that only becomes clear after years of leaning into the nothing.
More & more I am seeing the benefit of hard work for hard works sake and nothing else.
Hard work with and end in mind other than the work itself is centered on that other thing.
Hard work as its own end forces one to live in the present and nothing else. And in that is where God is found.
